This introductory course is designed to take the student from no knowledge of the Arabic script to basic reading proficiency. It is the foundational course for all other subsequent courses that build on the knowledge aquired in this course.

You will learn how to master the Arabic alphabet, learn how to pronounce the letters and read a voweled arabic text.

About the Course

In Introductory Arabic, you will set the groundwork for learning Arabic by mastering the alphabet and learning how to read any vowelled Arabic text.

The technique used in the course is based on traditional, time-tested methods of learning how to read, and is the best way to learn: through practical application and repetition, the course enhances the memorization needed to internalize the rules.

Course Syllabus

Nuraniyyah method: Learning to read by formulaic identification and repetitive articulation of individual consonants and associated vowels in words.

Course Format

The course consists of one weekly classroom session (3 units á 45 minutes), homework and practice assignments and a Final Progress Evaluation.

Weekly Time Commitment

Students can expect to dedicate at least two hours a week to learning the rules and practicing outside of the classroom. The higher the weekly time commitment, the higher the learning outcome.

Recommended Background

No background is required, this course is for students who have no prior experience with the Arabic alphabet.

Learning outcome of the course

By the end of this course, you will be able to read any vowelled Arabic script, including copies of the Quran. (You will also be able to spot which of the letter in the course picture are not actually Arabic script).
