Tajweed is the set of rules governing the correct recitation of the Qur'an. The term is derived from the root j - w - d, which means "to improve or make better".
The aim of Tajweed is to learn to give each letter its "right" in terms of length, exit point (makhratj) and its qualities (sifaat).
The Qur'an was revealed as a recited text with the Tajweed rules applied to it and insofar the Qur'an is inseparable from the Tajweed rules with which it is recited. Therefore, it is important to learn the correct way of reciting the Qur'an and to give each letter its rights.
Proper knowledge of Tajweed is important to ensure the consistency in the means of the Qur'an, because a slight change in pronunciation might change the meaning of an Ayah.
There is majority of scholars agree that correct recitation of the Qur'an is a personal obligation (fard a'yn) for each Muslim, men and women alike.
All our Tajweed courses are taught by teachers who have been trained in the traditional way by scholars and hold a valid teaching permission (Ijaza) from an authorized teacher with intact credentials (silsila). We teach the Hafs an Aasim qira'at.
Our courses have a traditional format in which students from different levels are taught together and learn from each other. The teacher starts the class with a short theory instruction and then there is individual practise and recitation time for each student. The course is gender seperated.
Students need to be familiar with Arabic script and should be able read a voweled text relatively fluently (however, speed is not an issue at this stage), before enrolling in a Tajweed class. Our “Introductory Arabic" classes can be taken in case this requirement is not yet met.
This is a continuous course where students can join at any time independent of their level of skill (apart from being able to read Arabic). Payment is organised monthly via PBS.
